Does anybody else have this experience when engaging 4H there is loud clunk . It doesn’t happen every time . Most of the times it changes 4h very smooth . Just wanted to know if this is normal . Also some time’s after shifting to 4 h . Drive is very rough . Vibration feel in gas pedal . I did post about this earlier in summer . Most of the answers i got was bcz i was driving on pavement even though i drive straight . But now in winters on snow . Its same . Not sure why would it be rough . Dealership checked and said bcz there is less weight at back so it normal to have 4 wheel drive like this .

Never had a clunk on engage or disengage. I drove 80mi 4HI through white knuckle driving my last storm chase, forgot I was in 4HI for 30mi of it. Super smooth.

I'd monitor it for sure.

Haven't had this one clunk, but every part time 4wd vehicle I've ever had did it now and again. It has to do with the current state of the drive line. I would say it's probably normal.

Yep def had this. Sometimes it feels pretty rough. Doesn’t matter speed or stress. Sometimes it’s at 3mph. Or sometimes 20. Just another thing that’ll break on these pos’s
Sorry brotha

Just as described. Usually it doesn’t happen but when it does speed, stress etc doesn’t matter.
Edited, sorry I remember reading about your situation.

Yeah mine has some nasty vibrations in the steering wheel and gas pedal when I accelerate in 4x4 but my 3rd gens did too. 4th gen is definitely more noticeable though

Thanks brotha. All in all I think the clunk is fine. I’m in upstate New York so we’ve been hammered with snow, so I’ve been in 4wd quite a bit. I think I notice it more getting out of 4wd and going back into 2wd. Be curious if you notice same thing over time.

Yes, mine "clunks" both directions (from 4H to 2H and back). I assure you it's not that unusual. This can be somewhat prevented if you make the shift while traveling and not stopped.

My old F150 did the same thing. My tacoma does it periodically. Pretty sure it’s normal.

If my wheels are turned slightly I get a clunk or sometimes if I'm stopped... I've found the smoothest way was coasting in a straight line then it's super smooth....

I think the manual says 60 MPH max in 4 H.

60mph max for engaging is right. Is that what you meant Sage?

I don’t believe there is a limit to how fast you can go once in 4wd.

I've had mine well above 60mph once engaged

You will get clunking on engaging and disengaging. I’ve noticed its smoother if you’re off the throttle.

So you can drive over 60mph in 4wd? I always get on the on ramp and turn it off when I get on the highway.... I always thought over 60mph would damage something? The highway where I live gets super icy sometimes but I always turn it off
