Donald Trump announced today that he intends to impose across the board 25% tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico the day he is inaugurated.

Does that mean a 25% increase in the price of a Tacoma? Toyota might absorb some of that, but it has to mean huge price increases on Tacomas and it will price a lot of us out of the Tacoma market. I bet Toyota wishes they had expanded in Texas, rather than Mexico.

Even with a wonky transmission I'm glad I already have my Tacoma.

Not meant to be a political discussion - doing that in the US today would be weird. I'm kind of surprised they even let the thread appear. Maybe a mod will wack it soon, so to speak.

Just wondering what that might mean for the price of a Tacoma next year.

I don't think it will because there should be enough of the Tacoma made outside of Mexico like in the states and other plants that it shouldn't cause a huge issue in price. I saw somewhere that someone had talked to their dealership and it looked to be less than a 1k increase in price projected. Hopefully that stays and doesn't make the trucks too expensive for the people still on the fence with them.

Tariffs work both ways, so the affected countries will impose tariff on US exports. Something like the Tacoma could get double taxed since our transmissions are exported from the US. The long standing chicken tax also makes Tacomas made in Japan an expensive proposition.

It will likely be used as a bargaining chip. Toyota may negotiate a carve-out on the tariffs in exchange for a promise to move or create more jobs in the U.S. In the meantime, they will need time to wind down their operations in Mexico or, most likely, build a different model, which will naturally take years. Additionally, the trade agreement (formally known as NAFTA) that was revised a few years ago is up for renewal in 2026.

I would be shocked if it came to fruition. The amount of trade between these countries is enormous; the cost of a Tacoma will be insignificant once you start considering the other affected items.

1. Glad I bought before this.
2. Good chance this will benefit existing owners and cost new buyers more.
3. I hope it works out in the end for everyone.

I understand economics very well and can only hope tariffs are used like a scalpel and not a hammer.

OK Mexico, no tariffs providing you shut YOUR southern border down tight as a drum. Secondly, you work with us to secure our border. Thirdly, you declare total war on the cartels and allow U.S. military to provide assistance. You want to be a good neighbor? Prove it!

I agree. I have my doubts about this having a huge impact on the price of the Tacoma. Should the tariffs wind up costing consumers even more, which I believe is what all the 'experts' are predicting, the public outrage will put enough pressure on politicians to reverse or put a hold on any "rash" decisions made by anyone ("repeal and replace the ACA" rings a bell). This last election was largely decided based on inflation outrage with the prices of everything going up the last few years, so I can't believe anyone would actually want to implement a policy which would increase prices even further (or vote for proposals that would increase prices, for that matter 😜).

Of the two plants in Mexico where the Tacoma is currently being assembled, I'm pretty sure one of them is a fairly new facility, so it'd be nuts for them to suddenly wind down operations there (maybe they could continue to use them to build the Hilux?). Either way, I do think it would be foolish to believe that the prices of things like cars and trucks will suddenly go down because we have a new president elect, and if Toyota did somehow manage to switch assembly of the Tacoma back to the States, does anyone actually believe this would make the truck LESS expensive?

Mexico is a major hub of automotive production in the western hemisphere, built up over the last 3 decades from the result of free trade policy and globalization. Ford, Chevy, Toyota, VW, Mazda, Nissan, Audi all have huge plants in Mexico. Much of the material and parts come from Canada. 80% of Mexico’s auto production comes to the US. Everybody is benefiting from the arrangement. Pulling the rug out from NAFTA or the exact same thing trump “renegotiated” called CMFGA or whatever it was, and going all isolationist or whatever isn’t going to make for a productive partnership. We don’t have the labor force or investment in plants and factories to go backwards to making all our own cars and trucks, there is record low unemployment and our standard of living is too high to supply the cheap labor to keep prices down where we can afford our beloved automobiles. Double down on that if you expel all undocumented workers. Anyhow, this is all posturing and it won’t actually happen I hope. This has fuckall to do with fentanyl, it’s just some chest beating to make everyone think we’re batshit crazy and hopefully concede on other negotiations
