Pretty much nailed it. Also, being a TH owner of course part of it is to be seen driving it. But at the same time, there are practical reasons too. It is not as simple as just one reason. I may not do truck stuff hardly ever in it, but I can if I need to. Same reason I buy guns. I don't expect to use it all the time but I can if I need to. In my area, almost everyone has a truck or SUV so if I had been in an accident in my Civic it would be me who is most likely to get completely destroyed. It also floods a lot in my area, and the truck has already helped me get through areas that would have drowned my little civic. The reason for the trim I chose though is that I do want to do overlanding. Currently, I am in nurse practitioner school and working as a nurse so I have no time. When that changes, I have a vehicle that is pretty much ready to go. Until then, it is gonna be a parking lot princess and I am gonna enjoy it all the same.

Beyond where we all are with income and assets will be my boomer hat speaking now. There is a lot of success envy and jealousy. I saw that started around 1980 and germinated way beyond punk music. Now it has grown much more and I'm sure it is aggravated by how hard it is to have income and assets if you do not possess the right skills or won a birth or marriage lottery.

The change is horrible. I was not doing well in that earlier time, was not making good choices, but for sure not alone being inspired by more successful people. Now where I supervise and lead at scale I see much more envy and jealousy towards success and educational attainment.

I believe much of this envy and parochial behavior has become deep and systemic.

6' Trailhunter, great workhorse, great tax write off, awesome adventure vehicle. Gen 4s are used at DIA airport security, seeing a lot of businesses using them.

IDK, the hate is basically like this: a lot of these gen 2 & 3 bros already dumped a ton of mods into theirs, still making payments on them. If you scooped up a '23 -$7K off sticker and want to slam a '24, you do you. Free country. I don't have time to watch that shit tho.

I did go 23 years where I didn't buy a new vehicle. Literally witnessed what time and wear & tear does to a new truck over 2 decades. Sure there was some envy when I saw new R1Ts and Raptors, AT4Xs rolling around my neighborhood. But hating on price = hating on blue collar workers building these trucks

Same YouTubers are gonna slam the gen 5s, there's a market for getting clicks & hating on stuff. The rest of us are busy building cool shit, doing fun stuff and getting on with our lives. fk all these amateur haters.
To your point, the first 4th gen tacos I stated seeing around me were work trucks, company owned fleet vehicles. And yeah, there is a market for negativity. People hate because it pays to have a dissenting opinion.

Just my opinion - I would venture that over 90% of those bitching about the 4G have never even driven one. They talk a lot about the "failing transmissions" when we know that there are only ~1000 identified as potentially at risk and probably way less than that that actually develop a problem - many of their owners on this exact forum saying that they're in the VIN range and haven't experienced any issues (thus far). The naysayers also say we're plagued with engine issues when in fact not many of us are since they're misunderstanding that the Tundra is the one with issues currently. They talk about the 'unproven 4-cyl engine' even though it's been in use in other Toyota vehicles for years.

Facts: The Tacoma 2.4 engine cooling system and 3" inlet are what are what Toyota spec's for their V8 engines. AKA massive cooling. The Tacoma 2.4 was designed to be 50% more durable and robust than their other 2.4 engines. The diff is from the Tundra and is a 9.5" diff. Our turbo is a commercial engine turbo and tested to a 50% greater duty time than their other turbos.

Bottom line is haters want their inefficient, slow, unrefined, noisy V6 back that has less than half the torque of our engines which we get at 1700rpms all the way up to 4300rpms.

The guy's title is a little strong but I get the all of it. I also chuckle at other aspects that include some reluctance with my return to owning a pickup because my Kenworth was a real tuck and my decisions were for a few years of needing a pickup truck or trailer too often to rent.

On what the market has become, a carpenter friend and I might be in a small minority for our recent purchases wanting something between basic and a halo model, and for Tacoma and location specific, the actual work it was for me to get the right long bed.
