Did the second oil change on the Tacoma today. First was around 500 miles and it’s posted on here somewhere. Second one at 5000 miles. You can see from the photos an example of one of three pieces of metal I found in the filter after cutting it open. Good news is filter is doing its job! Second, for me, I found the oil color to be about as dark as I expected, which is about as dark as I would like it to get before changing it. No way am I going to be following the once every 10,000 mile guidance from Toyota. Again, Your mileage may vary, but I’m not personally going to follow that interval. Again for this change, I used the OEM Toyota oil quarts. Price is not that much different for me when buying from the dealer at the counter vs. a good quality Penzoil or similar and it has much higher Moly and a great additive pack.

Recent drive history is putting around 2600 highway miles on it in the month of February and I usually drive somewhere between 75 and 95 miles an hour. I assume the oil would have been darker if it were mostly city.

Do you think the filter is of high quality? Also, do you think the filter should be bigger. Seems so tiny for that engine.

Yes, the oil filters are really well made. I’ve opened two of the OEM‘s and they’re totally well built. Normally I would use only Wix filters, but when I go to the parts counter at my dealer, the OEM filters are around the same price as ordering Wix from Amazon, so I just got those. As for the size of the filter, I’m sure it’s adequate for Toyotas 10,000 mileage interval. Not sure how it’s gonna play out when the engines are older and there’s a lot more gunk bypassing the rings. Will need to see cut opens in the hundreds of thousands of miles to see how saturated the media is getting, but on newer engines, I’m sure it’s absolutely fine. Again, my planned oil change intervals are going to be somewhere around 4000 to 4500 miles just based on what I’ve seen. I also plan to always use actual Toyota OEM oil and filters.

I agree that the 10k interval is a bit sketchy. I did my first one at 1k, planning to the next one at 5k. The shop I work at puts in stickers for 5k on synthetic regardless of what that particular vehicle's oil life monitor shows. I figure $20 every 5k is cheap insurance though.

I’m doing every 5K to be safe. It’s a turbo and want it to last a super long time.

If you search back a few months in the forum, I documented some debris in the oil on the first few changes or so w/pics. I was pretty anal about changing the oil, and now my truck just rolled 14K, oil has been changed 6 times. Yea, that's a bit overkill but to me 1) oil is cheap, engines are not 2) wanted to get all of the crud out of the engine. I'll change again @ 15K, then every 5K thereafter. Good for you for not doing the recommended change @ 10K. To me, just too much as stake for an early death of the engine with long drawn out oil changes.

Oh, OEM filters all the way for me!
