Pretty sure my transmission is on its way out.

On one hand, we customers want Toyota to keep us from inconvience and harm. On the other, until it fails, we haven‘t been inconvenienced or harmed so Toyota isn’t under any obligation to do anything. More of a catch 22 than Toyota treating us poorly.

The Tundra went about 2 years from launch before they were forced to do something by the govt. It’s questionable whether a failed/failing trans is going to be similarly considered a safety issue.

What boggles my mind is that a July pro not under the TSB had a transmission that blew up. So it seems like nobody is safe.

And a trail hunter I believe. I’m sure there plenty more as well

As a former toyota tech, as long as we could duplicate the symptoms, it was grounds for warranty claim. I haven't read this tsb but does it explicitly require a code to be present?

MY vin # isn't even close to the "effected" range but I do have shift issues where it skips 2nd gear but then down shifts into it. Also hard shift in and out of reverse.

Well that’s concerning, they are all symptoms of the inevitable failure

@RXvedub Cool - input from someone with some experience! Yes the TSB lists a series of VIN numbers of affected trucks, and then lists codes for solenoid failures that must be present for the TSB to apply.

But I have been wondering about the same thing. Even if you don't have the stored codes you should have a warranty claim if your transmission isn't working properly. Right? And a 4th gen transmission that is doing stuff like yours is definitely seems like it has a problem that the dealer needs to look into.

@Gfenza89 is in the same situation. His transmission is definitely not working right, but he does not have solenoid codes stored and his dealer has been telling him that his truck is normal. It obviously is not, but that has left him stuck in a bad place IMO.

Mine has shifted weirdly a couple of times, usually when I take my foot off the gas as I achieve ~30 mph and it almost always shudders as I go up a hill just before it downshifts. For that one, I just figured the tranny was waiting too long to downshift. I wasn't too concerned with it but maybe I should be... damn.

Either there’s a lot of bad trans out there or some of this is a software issue that can be fixed by reprogramming the computer . It’s about time Toyota come clean with us and tell everyone what in the hell is going on here

I would be concerned if I were you. My truck is just a few weeks old but it has never once shifted strangely or hesitated to downshift or shuddered. Is your truck in one of the VIN ranges?

Unfortunately, mine falls into the TSB VIN range, so it's likely not a software issue. I'm now worried about taking this truck to Foxboro next Sunday. It's a long drive from Maine and I'd hate to get stuck in those parking lots after a game. They're bad enough to get out of with a working transmission.

@Gfenza89 if you are confident the symptoms can be duplicated when the technician does a road test, you should take it in. Check engine or not, It is still an issue that needs repair. Dont mention the tsb or anything, play dumb. If anything you start the paper trail of repair requests.

@bresna I write software that controls machinery and I seriously doubt that this is a software issue. It sounds a lot more like shift solenoids not working correctly, which is what has caused the other transmission failures.

@RXvedub is right - don't mention what you know, just ask that a tech drive your truck if the problems are easily replicated.

Driving around town was horrible. It would cluck on downshifts. Shudder at low speeds. Hang between gear shifts.
Could you describe the shudder feeling to the best of your abilities I’m really curious if it’s the same shudder I’m feeling. Thank you !

Feeling it in the seat or rear end of the truck when slowing down in traffic, or coming to a stop. So in other words a small vibration. Sometimes worse than others. Also was felt when accelerating from a stop often 1-4th gear shifts. Hope that helps.
